Dakota Dunes CDC Literacy Volunteer Award Winner
Constance Thompson
Acceptance speech for LIT UP 2018
Thursday, March 15, 2018

When Cory called and asked if I would be around on March 15TH, as something was in the works, my response was simply, “yes, I am around.” Not long after, I received another call, and was informed that I had won this year’s volunteer award. I told Cecilia, READ’s office manager, to please have Kleenex ready, as I would probably cry while trying to accept the award. Personally, it is difficult for me to accept kudos, because I prefer to be in the background. Still, I am very thankful to be presented with this award.

Truly, there are many who deserve acknowledgement, the READ Saskatoon staff for starters: A special thanks to READ for allowing me the opportunity to help adults who want help developing their literacy. It has been a great pleasure to work with new learners, helping them to achieve their goals. Also, an extra-special-thank-you to Dakota Dunes CDC for making this award possible, and for being the volunteer sponsor for READ Saskatoon.

Learning is an ongoing process that continues throughout our lives, and adult learners are perhaps the greatest example of this. I definitely enjoy the connection I have been able to share with learners as a result of working with them; I have also thoroughly enjoyed watching learners make progress. It is wonderful to see the growth and change a learner can experience as a result their efforts.

Lastly, I would like to extend a sincere message of congratulations to all READ Saskatoon volunteers, and to all the adult learners who have benefitted from their help. Also, I would like to thank-you all once again for this award, thank you!
