Family Literacy through the eyes of Catherine, our Family Literacy Program Coordinator

Before I joined the team here at READ Saskatoon, I only had a very academic understanding of "Family Literacy”. Both “family” and “literacy” are very broad terms, and it’s been a challenge to discover what they mean together.

One of my favourite things so far has been facilitating the parent’s session in our Alphabet Soup in Motion program. The discussions have been on a wide variety of topics, from where to get good groceries for less money to ideas on how to make neighborhood parks safer for families. I find that parents are a wealth of information and they seem to really enjoy sharing tips and tricks with one another. In fact, 81% of parent participants reported increased interaction & community involvement as they learned from other parents, made new friends, and their children made new friends (READ Saskatoon Interim Family Literacy Report, November 18th, 2014).

As a facilitator, I am daily improving my own Family Literacy by learning about the challenges and triumphs that fill the lives of the families I meet, and how we at READ Saskatoon can support the learning that happens through their experience.

Our recently completed Conexus Credit Union presents: Family Literacy Month was a wonderful way to get to know many of you and I truly appreciate everyone's support and participation. I hope to see you at the next READ Saskatoon family literacy program
