Volunteer Opportunities

Foundations staff and volunteers have provided literacy assistance to hundreds of adults, children, and families over the last 40 years. A diverse variety of volunteer opportunities are available to continue this rich literacy legacy:

Lead

Foundations provides one-to-one adult and small group instruction. Volunteers are matched with an adult learner to meet weekly. Learning sessions last between one and one and a half hours and take place in mutually agreeable locations such as branches of the Saskatoon Public Library. A six (6) month volunteer commitment is required. Volunteers attend a free full day training on tutoring methods and techniques, and they have ongoing support from Foundations in their development as coaches. Read stories about our coaches and learners in Our Stories.

Family Literacy Program

The various components of this program support literacy development for the entire family and encourages parents and children to learn together. Volunteers work collaboratively with the Family Literacy Coordinator to help support the relationship between caregivers and children by modeling that literacy is not limited to reading and writing. The Family Literacy Volunteer training is required to volunteer for this program.

Spark

Foundations provides one-to-one support to strengthen children’s reading strategies. Reading Guides attend a 3-hour training on reading methods and strategies and will be provided all resources needed. Volunteers are matched with an elementary school student and meet during the day. The volunteer commitment is twice per week for a minimum of 8 weeks.

Financial Literacy Program

Financial literacy volunteers help expand Foundations’ financial literacy network. They also assist the Financial Literacy Coordinator in presenting financial literacy information at community workshops. Financial Literacy volunteers are required to be currently employed by a bank or credit union in Saskatchewan to assist Foundations in identifying program gaps and opportunities for funding and partnerships. Please contact our Financial Literacy Coordinator at (306) 652-5448 or [email protected]

Is your family interested in volunteering with Foundations?

Each year Foundations has room for 5 families to spend time volunteering together at our Family Literacy events – Payday Playday and the Saskatchewan Odyssey. The expectation is two events per year, totalling 6 hours. Children must be Grade 5 or older and parents must attend a volunteer orientation and complete the volunteer screening process.
