Spark Volunteer Training

Spark matches volunteers with an elementary school student in grades 2-4. Our Spark volunteers meet twice per week for 8-weeks with the goal of bringing the student’s reading to grade level.

We provide volunteers and students with the materials for this program, including leveled readers, books tailored to their reading interests, a journal to facilitate communication between parents/caregivers and volunteers, and a bookmark with reading strategies outlined.

Spark volunteers attend this 3-hour training on reading methods and strategies. We aim to teach a wholistic view of reading: students demonstrate an enhanced use of reading strategies and display positive reading habits through the practice exercises, review of qualities of successful readers, and reading out loud.
