Who is Foundations Learning?

Foundations Learning & Skills Saskatchewan (formerly READ Saskatoon) is a charitable, non-profit literacy organization that offers free literacy and skills development to adults and children. Literacy remains as important today as it was in 1979, when Foundations was established. The Role

Working closely with the Program Manager and staff team, the Summer Student Literacy Assistant will support all Foundations Learning literacy initiatives. They will provide support to and deliver children’s and family literacy programs (including one-on-one reading support and group work), they will work alongside literacy coordinators to determine the scope of summer literacy initiatives, assist with duplicating family literacy event materials, and other literacy tasks as assigned. Full training will be given in all four program areas.

 

Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • Working towards a degree or diploma in an education or related field

 

Skills and Competencies:

  • Interest in family and children’s literacy is an asset.
  • Understanding and appreciation of cultural adaptation, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Understanding of and familiarity with the Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft 365, especially Word and Excel.
  • Ability to develop positive and collaborative working relationships with a variety of stakeholders (parent groups, children, community-based organizations, and partners)
  • Strong leadership skills

 

Working Conditions:

This position works a standard work week (8:30 – 4:30) and may be required to work some evenings and weekends.

 

Salary Range

$18/hr

 

Term

Twelve-week summer student position (June to August 2024).
