Good afternoon everyone,

My name is Seabaschine Rockthunder, and I’ve been in the Adult Literacy Program since 2018. I first came to the program to learn how to read and spell and improve my writing. I am working with my coach Cassidy, and we have been working on reading, spelling, and writing. Every meeting we start with a ten-minute reading activity where she reads me a chapter from a book. We also play online games for spelling and vocabulary, go through reading exercises, and work on writing sentences and paragraphs. Cassidy and I have been working together since October 2020, and I have been working with her the longest during my time in the program. We have a lot of fun during our weekly meetings and always make time at the beginning to share new stories about our cats.

Since joining the program, I feel more confident when I am reading, and I can recognize mistakes quickly during our activities when I am reading aloud, writing, or spelling. I can spell better and write out longer words and sentences. I can also read longer sentences as well and have improved in writing paragraphs. I can recognize and read signs on buses more easily and feel more confident when I come across signs around the city. I have an easier time recognizing words in text messages and books as well and have an easier time sounding out new words that I come across. I also have a lot of books at work that I can now read on my own. I’m more confident in my abilities when the time comes for me to move on from the program.

My future goals include writing, and I would like to improve on using commas, and apostrophe’s in my sentences. I would also like to continue to work on homonyms and the usage of different words. I would still like to continue to work on my reading and work on staying on task while doing so.I would like to work toward reading more books on my own. I’d like to travel a lot in the future and plan to visit Brazil, Spain, and Dubai.

I am thankful for my experiences in the program and all of the learning I’ve done so far. I’ve always had a good experience with my tutors, and it means a lot to be nominated for and receive this award.

Congratulations to Seabaschine Rockthunder, this year’s Saskatoon Lions Club Learner Achievement Award recipient at Foundations’ Golf Tournament for Literacy!
