Kristen Hamm – Helping Saskatoon READ

International Literacy Day is September 8, but through his volunteer efforts with READ Saskatoon, Kristen Hamm, Regional Director for Freedom 55 Financial at the Saskatchewan Financial Centre, is always encouraging literacy in his community.

He’s been volunteering his time with READ Saskatoon since 2008 and was recently able to contribute to the organization financially with a Community Volunteer Grant.

“In the end, funds are what keep the organization operating,” he says. “It was great to be able to help in that way in addition to my time as a volunteer.”

Being a numbers guy, Kristen first got involved with the READ Saskatoon to help with fundraising events like their PGI golf tournament. The tournament has since grown in popularity, selling out well in advance and raising almost $50,000 annually for the organization.

A few years ago he moved to a more permanent role on the Board of Directors, leading READ Saskatoon’s Fund Development Committee.

“We focus on how we can continue to increase our financial commitments and continue to become more financially self-sustainable,” he says.

READ Saskatoon is a volunteer literacy organization. Through staff and trained volunteers they deliver free literacy programs for individuals, families, workplaces, and the community.

Kristen says it’s the people involved in the organization who keep him coming back.

“READ Saskatoon has the best staff. Their enthusiasm and passion for the work they do is truly amazing,” he says. “It comes through in every event and interaction they have here in Saskatoon. I’m privileged to be part of such a great organization.”
